I don’t know about you, but my Facebook feed is literally exploding with ads about how I have to run my business. It makes my head spin:

“This ONE strategy will triple your client base in 30 days!”

“The 10 things you MUST do if you want to build a high-end XX business!”

“Learn the EXACT things I did to make 6 figures in one launch!”

It’s tempting, right? We all want that quick fix. That one way that we’re going to make our millions.
But here’s the truth:

If you think you can replicate exactly what someone else did and have it work for you, you are likely to end up disappointed. And perhaps having wasting a bunch of time and money.

Every human being is different. That means that every single business is different.

Different vision. Different purpose. Different style. Different personality. Different content. Different different different.

Now, that’s not to say we don’t all have things in common.

We in fact do, and I’ve based my whole business on the belief that our businesses follow a natural cycle just as we humans and every other living species out there does.

So then what to do?

First, there’s no need to throw the baby out with the bath water.

There are tried and true methods of marketing that work really well. For example, intentionally building your referral network and teaching a free or low-cost class are two of the simplest strategies you can use to grow your business.

I am confident making the statement that if you have a local, largely in-person business, you are willing to talk to people and teach, and you are willing to stick with it, that these two strategies alone (or even one of them) are most likely enough to grow a successful, lucrative business.

And while that’s true – and there are great strategies for doing them effectively that can absolutely be taught – the way YOU do them is going to look different from the way I or anyone else does them. 

An example:

I use and teach a particular structure to teach a class. It is made up of at least three different systems I’ve learned for delivering curriculum and marketing my business. In other words, I learned systems, used them, merged and morphed them, and turned them into my own system. And I continue to practice, learn and evolve it.

So I can and will teach you this great outline for offering a class that gets people excited about working with you. And as you do it over and over, you will then make changes to that outline to suit your personality, your vision, your needs, and your business.

Which is a totally natural evolution. Yay!

There are coaches who say, “If you do it my way, I guarantee you’ll be successful. But you have to do it exactly as I tell you.” 

I truly wonder how effective that is (in truth, I don’t actually know, because I would never hire a coach that says that).

But like I said, let’s NOT throw the baby out with the bath water. There is no need to completely reinvent the wheel.

Learn other people’s wheels, but then adjust that wheel to make it your own.

Work with people who acknowledge that not every strategy will work for you, people who will help you find your own inner marketing guru, who is not found on Facebook.

Your business model, stage of business development, vision, gifts, goals, and who you are (do you even want to teach a class?) have a huge impact on how you run your business.

Take the time to tune into that.

One Nuance I’ll Offer…

If you’ve decided on a marketing strategy, based on what your business truly needs, and you know that you need to learn how to do a specific thing (let’s say for example, you want to learn how to write better blog posts or create your first Facebook ad), there are a lot of great resources and trainings out there that would probably really help you do this. Go seek them out.

But be wary of language like, “this ONE strategy is your key to success.” Because how the heck do they know exactly what you need?! It just may be the one strategy that will work for you, but do your research and make sure it makes sense for you before diving in.

And Finally…

Becoming successful in business takes time and patience. As does finding your authentic voice in your marketing and finding a business model that works for you. As with most things in life, the quick fixes generally don’t work.

The best advice I can give you as a business owner is to:

  • Know that it’s a long term commitment – dedicate yourself to your success, however you define it
  • Learn from people who went before you – true teachers are an invaluable gift
  • Put yourself out there with courage – practice, experiment with what you’ve learned and be willing to receive feedback and change
  • Create your own unique way of doing business – trust me, in a few years, you’ll be teaching others how you did it (if you’re not already!)

And how about this for an option?
