I write straight-up, useful & entertaining emails about once a week.

It’s up to each of us to find our own unique habits and practices to stay healthy, aligned, and centered. Here, I’ll explain why meditating can be an incredibly powerful practice to incorporate, in particular for entrepreneurs.

Plus, it’s a great time of year to get a new practice going (whether it’s this one or not!).

A few months ago, I heard the wonderful, elder, Eco-Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy say something very powerful that evoked these thoughts in me about entrepreneurship:

At the core, meditation is really about practicing CHOICE.

In each moment of meditating, we must choose to overcome the huge momentum of our mind’s busyness and come back to center, to the place we have deemed important. And that is not easy to do.

Meditation builds the muscle that helps us develop the inner strength to continuously choose what we do in a given moment, instead of being bowled over by outside circumstances.

For example, in our businesses, we can feel stuck, scared, vulnerable, that we’re not good enough, or simply be distracted by the tasks other people want us to do… all things that take us away from our own vision and goals.

But we have to find the strength to keep going.

Meditation is practice for that.

There’s this “discipline” thing that I always thought I should be cultivating more of. But it’s actually not about discipline. It’s about cultivating inner power and making the conscious choice to keep showing up for our visions and goals even if it is sometimes hard, or we don’t want to do it, or we’re having a crappy day.

So that’s my number one reason why meditating is great for entrepreneurs. There are a million other reasons (not the least of which is learning how to be with challenging feelings like fear and anxiety, also things that can come up in the inner world of the entrepreneur!), but we’ll leave it at that for now.

Below you’ll find links to my favorite meditation teachers and guided meditations so you can get started today. I’m a fan of guided meditations myself, but of course you can just sit quietly as well, using my favorite app, Insight Timer 🙂

  • Tara Brach is a therapist and Buddhist teacher who has a particular focus on being with and befriending fear and anxiety. She is incredibly warm and nurturing. You can find her amazing free podcast here (I do one of her guided meditations almost every morning). The longer podcasts are talks, and the shorter ones are guided meditations.

  • Adyashanti is an enlightened spiritual teacher that I have had the immense gift of sitting with a number of times. His message is pure and his wisdom and metaphors hit home for me (and so many others) in a deep way. Plus, he is a very funny guy from New Jersey to boot. He has a few free guided meditations on his site (go to the library page of his site), or you can purchase hundreds of different recordings from live events.
  • Reggie Ray is a Buddhist somatic meditation teacher. If you want to combine your meditation with a physical practice and feel yourself deeply relax into the earth, Reggie is your man. I recommend his audio set, Your Breathing Body, and he also has a free podcast.
  • Finally, if you want to kick start your practice, you can do one of Oprah and Deepak’s 21-day Meditation Challenges. They do a free one every so often, and they’ll send you a new guided meditation each day. I’ve found them to be high quality, very uplifting, and a good way to create consistency in your practice.

Enjoy, and let me know how it goes!
